Northeast Miss. jobless rate lowest in more than 3 years

By Dennis Seid

According to preliminary figures from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security, it appears the jobs market for the 16 counties of Northeast Mississippi is getting better.

The combined unemployment rate for the region in March was 8.9 percent, a full percentage point lower than February’s 9.9 percent.

The February figure was the first time the region’s jobless rate had dipped below 10 percent since March 2009.

This March’s 8.9 percent is the lowest jobless rate for Northeast Mississippi since November 2008, when the rate was 8.1 percent.

The Village Green to close after 32 years

By Dennis Seid

After 32 years of business, Jim Troxler is closing The Village Green.

Tomorrow, he’ll start a going-out-of-business liquidation sale at the store on West Main Street.

Troxler, 65, said he doesn’t want to stop working, but said closing the business was the best move.

“We’ve struggled the last five years trying to keep it afloat, and we finally came to the point where we knew we just weren’t going to make it,” he said.

The store, know for its collectible items, Christmas goods, books and other items, moved to its current location in 1998. But overhead costs and declining sales during an economic downturn proved too difficult to overcome, he said.

Troxler hopes to sell the building and all of its contents.
