BIZ BUZZ: Tupelo Commons work is for unnamed project

You’ve no doubt seen the dirt being moved, the access road being built and what appears to be a pad

Work on Commonwealth Boulevard by the shopping center housing Ashley, Hancock Fabrics and others, will connect it to the access road to the Hampton Suites, in the background. Dirt work on land adjacent to the road is for an unnamed project.

The land, which sits behind Malco and Lowe’s and is just south of the Hampton Inn and Suites, is being built up by developer V.M. Cleveland, who bought the majority of what is called the Tupelo Commons retail development a few years ago.

At one time, it was the preliminary site for outdoors retailer Gander Mountain, but that deal never materialized. The land also was part of a planned 3- to 4- hotel bloc. But the recession put a lot of plans on hold, so we don’t know – yet – what’s going on.

However, Biz Buzz spoke to Cleveland, and he confirmed the work going on out there is for a “project,” which he declined to name. Still working out details on the deal, he said.

So, let the speculation begin …
