BOARD APPOINTS SOUTH AS NEW POLICE CHIEF

MANTACHIE – During its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, the Board of Alderman unanimously voted to appoint Sammy South as police chief of this Itawamba County town of more than 800.

South started the new post Wednesday.

South replaced Skip Fletcher, who submitted his resignation in early December stating he was returning to his old job with the Red Bay, Ala., Police Department. His resignation was effective Dec. 31.

South, who was hired by Fletcher, had worked as a part-time officer in Mantachie for a little more than a year and a half. He is also employed as an investigator with the Belmont Police Department, a job he has held for five years.

Mantachie Mayor Dan Moore said South will work with both departments for about six months, giving him time to relocate from Belmont.

South and five other people applied for the $20,000-a-year job. Moore said he and the board wanted to promote from within the department.

“It’s hard to go outside the department when you have someone as equally qualified within,” Moore said.

South could not be reached for comment.

Moore said the town will now have to hire a part-time officer. Officials will probably choose from the applications they already have.
