BYHALIA — Marshall County authorities have recovered the body of a man who reportedly drowned after jumping off a bridge into a river canal.

Deputy Kelly McMillan says rescue crews and dive teams from Holly Springs and Byhalia Fire Departments responded to a call of a possible drowning about 3 p.m. Tuesday.

McMillan says the body of 27-year-old Elton Wayne Hughes was recovered 45 minutes later. He says Hughes was swimming in the canal, got into some deep water and went under before he could make it back to the bank.

Hughes is from the Chulahoma community area in Marshall County.
