Bond set for man arrested in Clay County death

By The Associated Press

WEST POINT — Bond has been set at $250,000 for a West Point man charged with murder in a stabbing death late Sunday night at a small nightclub in the White Station community of northern Clay County.

WCBI-TV in Columbus reports that Charles Smith was in court Wednesday for a bond hearing.

Chief Deputy Eddie Scott has not disclosed a motive in the case.

Scott says Charles Smith was arrested and charged with murder in the death of 60-year-old Benny Oats outside Club G’s. Authorities say Oats died at a local hospital from a stab wound to the chest.

Oats’ body has been sent to the Mississippi Crime Lab in Jackson for an autopsy.
