Booneville man dead after apparent drowning

A 21-year-old man died early Sunday morning of an apparent drowning.

England-Dan Salts of Booneville was pronounced dead at North Mississippi Medical Center at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, said Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green.

Green said Salts and a group of friends were camping at a site off of White Rock Road, off of Mt. Vernon Road, when Salts drowned. Because he suffered a broken neck in the incident, an autopsy will be performed on Monday to determine cause of death.

Salts is the son of former Prentiss County funeral home directors Michael and Marie Salts, who are scheduled to be sentenced in federal court on Monday. The couple, who are no longer married, were indicted last year on two counts that they committed mail fraud associated with a Tupelo house purchase. The government claims that they used a third party to purchase a house because they couldn’t get financing. So the indictment claims they used a former employee to apply for the loan and buy the house in 2008. They have pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Oxford.
