Booneville sets beer referendum

BOONEVILLE — A special election is set for Aug. 17 for Booneville voters to decide if beer and light wine sales will be permitted in the city.

Booneville aldermen set the date this week after being presented with a petition of the legal number of local registered voters.

The Citizens for New Business and Growth began a push several months ago to gather enough signatures on a petition calling for the special election.

In November 1983 a liquor referendum was defeated by Prentiss County voters.

Then, in December 1983 a beer and wine referendum was defeated by Booneville city voters.

The special election will take place at Westside Community Center with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
