Lee County teen sentenced to life in prison for murder of his grandfather.

TUPELO – Brett Jones, 15, was convicted Friday of murder in the stabbing death of his grandfather. A Lee County jury sentenced Jones to life in prison.
Jones stood trial for the stabbing death of his grandfather, Bertis Jones, on Aug. 9. Defense attorneys Will Bristow and Rob Laher have said Jones' actions were taken in self-defense.
Circuit Court jurors on Wednesday were read a typed transcript that Brett Jones gave the night of his arrest when he allegedly confessed to killing his grandfather.
On the first day of the teenager's trial, Lt. Scott Reedy, an investigator with the Lee County Sheriff's Office, read the transcript of a 45-minute interview with Jones taken several hours after his grandfather's body was found in a utility room of his Shannon house.
Michelle Austin, Jones' girlfriend, testified Thursday that her boyfriend told her he was going to hurt his grandfather, hours before the 67-year-old was stabbed to death.
Austin took the witness stand and identified herself as Jones' girlfriend. Last month, a Lee County grand jury indicted her as an accessory after the fact of murder. She hasn't gone to trial.
