CANTON — Gov. Haley Barbour said Monday he is calling a special session later this week on the Department of Human Services and is delaying until Sept. 15 plans to cut 65,000 people off the state’s Medicaid roll.
The thousands of Medicaid recipients were to have been taken off the program at the end of this month. Lawmakers and others had urged Barbour to delay the cut.
Barbour told a drug store news conference he wants the Division of Medicaid to aggressively inform those going off Medicaid exactly what the changes will mean to them.
Legislative action is needed this week on the Department of Human Services, which handles millions of dollars in federal programs such as food stamps, because the agency is set to go out of business when the new fiscal year starts this Thursday.
