MERIDIAN – A new interstate highway interchange planned near Meridian requires demolition of a bridge just east of the city and the rerouting of traffic on Interstate 20 and 59.
The Hawkins Crossing Bridge was scheduled to come down Friday night.
The bridge is being demolished because it was not up to the safety standards.
Officials say the interchange should ease congestion at some of the busier interchanges in town, and it will provide easier access to the industrial parks on that side of town.
Officials said they expected the rerouting of interstate traffic to be over this morning.
