BRUCE – Davis Brown threw three of his four touchdown passes in the third quarter, and Bruce, the No. 2 school in the Daily Journal’s small school rankings, rallied from a 10-point deficit to defeat Houston 25-17 in area high school football action Friday night.
The win lifted the Trojans to 5-1 on the season.
Davis connected with Maine Tillman on touchdown passes of 25 and 6 yards. Bruce scored 19 points in the third period, the first six on Davis’ 26-yard toss to Reed Gregory. Brown passed 29 yards to Shaq Bush neared the end of the quarter.
“Houston did a good job in the first half, but we made some adjustments in the second half,” Bruce coach James Ray said. “Our line did a good job, and Davis threw the lights out. He had a really good night.”
Houston got a 26-yard field goal from Emmitt Dendy in the first quarter and stretched the lead in the second when Sharone Wright and Brandon Townsend teamed up on a screen pass that covered 32 yards.
But the Toppers (3-3) didn’t score again until late in the fourth when Wright passed 16 yards to Quon Brandon.
Houston was never able to recapture its momentum from early in the game.
Toppers coach Donnie Rodgers hopes to see improved blocking when his team plays at Louisville next week.
“We’ve got to learn to block. If I live until Monday, I’m going to find five people who can block,” he said.
