Brush fire smolders in wooded area near Gulfport

By The Associated Press

GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — A massive brush fire burning near Gulfport may have been started by a resident burning trash.

More than two dozen firefighters responded to three separate locations in Harrison County. All three areas had wooden terrain being consumed by smoke and flames. An estimated 150 acres of land burned on Monday.

WLOX-TV ( ) reports that for much of Monday night, firefighters kept an eye on the smoldering land. Harrison County’s fire marshal says tires, old cars, and RVs parked on that property gave the fire enough fuel to burn for several more hours.

Fire officials say the resident who may have ignited the brush fire could be cited for a variety of code violations.
