Bryant, Luckett in Miss. governor's race

By The Associated Press

JACKSON — Republican Phil Bryant and Democrat Bill Luckett have been campaigning for governor for months. On Monday, the first work day of the 2011 election year, they ramped up their efforts.

Bryant, the one-term lieutenant governor, is making several appearances to announce what everyone already knows — that he’s a candidate for the state’s top job. One of those stops will come this afternoon in Tupelo.

Luckett, a Clarksdale attorney and business partner of actor Morgan Freeman, filed his qualifying papers in Jackson.

Others prominent names lining up for governor include Republican Gulf Coast businessman Dave Dennis and Democrat and Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny Dupree.
