JACKSON – Gov. Phil Bryant is naming an environmental lawyer to replace the outgoing head of Mississippi’s environmental agency.
Bryant named Gary Rikard as the next executive director of the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality on Wednesday.
Rikard is a partner in the Memphis, Tennessee, office of the Mississippi-based Butler Snow LLP law firm. He was previously an environmental engineer and a lawyer for Mississippi’s environmental agency, departing in 1998.
Bryant says he’s a good choice because of his legal and technical experience.
He will replace Trudy Fisher, who has led the Department of Environmental Quality since 2007. Fisher, who was appointed by Gov. Haley Barbour and retained by Bryant, said in May she was leaving the department to explore other career options.
Rikard will serve subject to confirmation by the state Senate.
