HATTIESBURG — Gov. Phil Bryant will be the commencement speaker at his alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi.
The university says Bryant will speak during two ceremonies May 10 on the Hattiesburg campus — one at 10 a.m. and one at 2:30 p.m.
USM Gulf Coast will hold a separate graduation ceremony May 11 at Mississippi Coast Coliseum. Bryant is not scheduled to speak there.
Bryant is a 1977 graduate of USM, with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. His children, Katie and Patrick, are both USM graduates.
The Republican was sworn in as governor in January 2012, after having served as lieutenant governor, state auditor and state representative from a district at the Ross Barnett Reservoir outside Jackson. He started his career as a Hinds County deputy sheriff.
