Burke’s Outlet to fill former bookstore

TUPELO – Apparel and home goods discount retailer Burke’s Outlet is moving into the former Books-A-Million location.
Construction plans have been filed with the city’s planning department.
A company representative was not immediately available for comment.
The Bradenton, Fla.-based chain has more than 160 stores in 11 states. The company has 10 stores in Mississippi, mostly in the south and central parts of the state.
A Columbus store is the nearest store to Tupelo in Northeast Mississippi.
The former Books-A-Million is located in the Barnes Crossing Plaza that includes Toys R Us, Hobby Lobby, Office Max and T.J. Maxx.
The bookstore closed in late 2011 after a 15-year run in the city.
Burke’s Outlet is privately held.
The company sells discounted brand name apparel and accessories, as well as shoes, home furnishings, gifts and stores.
Founded in 1915 by Robert M. Beall as Dollar Limit, it was renamed Five Dollar Limit in 1918. Beall’s son, E.R. Beall, joined the company in 1940 and the company was named Beall’s Department Store.
The outlet operations began in the early 1980s and the first store opened in 1987. The Burke’s name was first used in 1992.
The Beall’s Outlet name is used in Arizona, Florida and Georgia. The rest of the company’s stores are Burke’s Outlets.
