FedEx Ground will be moving into a new 60,000-square-foot distribution center in Tupelo.
The facility on North Coley Road will be located on a site adjacent to where the northern loop will be built, connecting Coley to Barnes Crossing Road.
Construction crews have been working on the site for the facility, which is scheduled to open in September.
The new distribution center will replace an older 18,000-square-foot facility nearby. FedEx Ground employs 36 employees in Tupelo and dispatches 34 trucks.
Those employees will be transferred to the new facility.
Jesse Bull, a spokesman for FedEx Ground, said it will add workers “as necessary to support increased demand for service in the area.”
Clearly, FedEx anticipates business to grow.
Bull said the new facility is part of the company’s nationwide expansion to boost its capacity.
“Since 2005, the company has opened 11 new hubs featuring the most advanced material-handling systems and expanded or relocated more than 500 local facilities,” he said.
The Tupelo site was chosen “because of its ease of access to major highways, its proximity to customers’ distribution centers and a strong local community workforce for recruiting employees.”
FedEx said its network enhancements have cut ground service delivery by one day or more in two-thirds of the U.S.
According to the company, FedEx Ground delivers more than 62 percent of packages in two days or less and more than 82 percent of packages in three days or less.
FedEx declined to reveal how much it is investing in the new facility.
