TUPELO – Firehouse Subs is expected to open next spring.
The restaurant will be located in the former Dixie Gas station on West Main Street, which sits across from Wendy’s and Starbucks. Also on the same block are a Hardee’s and McDonald’s.
Chris Stephenson, the Firehouse Subs franchisee who opened his Oxford location in 2011, said once construction begins, it will take about five months to have the restaurant ready to open.
“Hopefully, we’re looking at April or May, assuming we don’t run into any problems getting things started,” he said.
He said the Oxford store opening was delayed a bit by weather issues when construction began three years ago.
“We had a lot of snow that year,” he said.
The 2,025-square-foot restaurant in Tupelo will seat up to 61 people, according to plans filed with the city.
Stephenson said employment at the Tupelo location will be similar to what he has in Oxford, which is a 2,400-square-foot store.
“I have four to five full-timers there, and 15 part-timers. A lot of them are college kids,” he said.
Stephenson first announced the Tupelo store in June of last year, but said he had to put the project on the back burner to work on a few other issues.
Firehouse Subs, based in Jacksonville, Fla., has more than 600 locations in 35 states and PuertoRico. In Mississippi, there are locations in Oxford, Starkville, Hattiesburg and Flowood.
The restaurant chain was founded in 1994 by former firefighters Robin and Chris Sorensen, who are brothers.
