TUPELO – This year’s Christmas celebration in Fairpark will include more than a tree lighting.
Fairpark will be home for a free Christmas concert, primarily sponsored by The Orchard and the Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association. The concert will be Dec. 5 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Amy Gill Lothorp, a member of the event’s planning committee and an Orchard staff member, said the concert was planned after seeing how well the Down on Main summer concert series went.
“We had a desire to get the community together” again, she said.
The Orchard’s band will perform Christmas songs at the concert, which will be held on a stage in front of City Hall. The event also will feature a chorus made up of fifth-graders from around Tupelo.
The Orchard will be selling Christmas CDs at the concert with all proceeds going to the Boys & Girls Club and The Salvation Army.
Along with the concert, there will be a free nonalcoholic, hot beverage contest. Lothorp said she expects it will be a cookoff of many different types of hot chocolate and apple cider.
“We hope it will wind up being an annual event,” Lothorp said. “But this is our first time so we’ll see how it goes.”
John Oxford, chairman of the Tupelo Redevelopment Agency, which governs Fairpark, said the concert is a good example of the variety of events that can be held in Fairpark.
“A Christmas concert and a tree lighting is an excellent way to use this space for the community,” he said. “We look forward to many more events like this.”
He added that TRA and the Main Street Association are open to ideas from residents about uses for Fairpark. Contact the Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association at (662) 841-6598.
