A locksmith for 25 years, Steve Dilberian has yet to meet his match.

“All it takes is a little time,” he said. “There’s really not a lock that can’t be picked.”

But Dilberian spends about two-thirds of his time these days making keys for automobiles. Sometimes it’s a key that gotten worn or an electric fob that’s no longer working. Dilberian and his business, Affordable Lock & Key, can make a new key or get the fob working again.

Until this year, Dilberian was mobile, as he worked out of his signature van. But after five years of doing that, he opened his first brick-and-mortar location in Tupelo at 497 S. Gloster St. Affordable shares the same building with McAlister’s Deli, but its store front faces Varsity Drive.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Dilberian moved to Tupelo in 2008.

He comes from a law enforcement family, many of whom were either policemen or fireman. But asthma prevented him from being either, and he became a locksmith like one of his brothers.

Dilberian worked for several years with banks in New York, but has worked with businesses of every size. He’s also had locksmith businesses elsewhere, but move to Tupelo to be closer to his daughter.

The basic tools of the trade haven’t changed – lock picks and drills, for example. But diagnotic equipment and other technology continues to add more elements.

“You just have to say educated on it, which I do,” he said.

While he has set store hours, the service is 24/7 year-round.

“I’m always available,” Dilberian said. “You have to be in this business.”
