Carolyn Shelby became interested in costumes during her time as a fashion model in California. She’d run two stores, including a clothing store in downtown Tupelo, but Costume World was the business that stuck.
She’s been in the hot pink building at Crosstown for 23 years.
Shelby specializes in costume sales and rentals. She has costumes for school plays, church plays, Halloween, holidays and special events. She sells full-face masks, theater makeup, hats, shoes, gloves and loads of other costume accessories.
Antebellum dresses and hats are popular for rental. But Shelby said she has more costume sales than rentals.
Halloween is the store’s busiest time of the year, and she’ll add several employees to help with the rush. She specializes in adult costumes and carries sizes 2 through 5X for women.
She also does special orders for shoes and costumes.
So far, costumes for couples have been popular this year, along with sexy costumes for women.
Costume World also provides fully dressed characters, such as SpongeBob or Big Bird, for children’s birthday parties.
Plus, the business does limousine rentals, passport photos and photo IDs.
