The cooking starts before 7 a.m. at Down Home Cooking in Verona. The restaurant is open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Mattie Edwards usually cooks five meats and a plethora of vegetables and desserts. On Friday, her brother, James McGaughy, breaks out the grill for ribs and other meats.
“If we can get you through the door one time, we’ll get you back no problem,” McGaughy said.
Popular items at the 11-year-old restaurant are macaroni and cheese, stuffed/deviled eggs, fried green tomatoes, fried pork chops, tossed salads, ribs, fried chicken, chicken and dressing, hamburger steak, green beans and banana pudding.
The hot food and vegetables are popular in the winter, but summer can be slow, McGaughy said.
“If you can maintain and hold in there, business will pick up,” he said.
The restaurant has a seating area and is popular with workers at nearby factories. Down Home Cooking also caters for weddings, family reunions and other special events.
