HOMEGROWN: Ginger's

Ginger’s

Ginger’s is the only original tenant left in Harpers Square Mall.
Started in 1988 by Ginger Stockton’s father-in-law, Ginger’s began as a children’s and maternity store and stayed that way for 10 years.
“Then we branched into ladies and eased into gifts,” Stockton said. “Now we go all the way from infant through ladies size 16.”
The store also sells Vera Bradley items, Brighton accessories, candles, pottery and shoes.
“This store is entirely different from when we started,” she said.
The 6,000-square-foot store also features a well-used children’s play area, where kids watch TV while their parents shop.
The bridal and baby registries are popular at the store, as is the “pink card” customer loyalty program, which offers discounts to frequent shoppers. Plus, the store has free gift-wrapping services.
The store is family owned, but Stockton runs the daily operations.
Being a locally owned store, it’s important to be involved in the community through volunteer efforts, she said. It’s also essential that small business owners stay up-to-date about their industry, Stockton added.
“You need to stay well-educated within the area you’ve chosen to go into,” she said. “I go to seminars, markets, online training and I read the industry publications.”
