Pam Curry runs one of only two mom-and-pop, locally owned video stores in Mississippi. Curry owns and operates J’s Video, across Kyle Drive from Walmart. It’s been in her hands since 2007.

“The distributor that I get most of my videos from said there is one left on the Gulf Coast,” said Curry. “The big chains are closing down but we’re still here.”

J’s Video has been in Houston for more than 25 years. The business got its start when Gary McQuary started renting videos out of J.C. Doss’s furniture store on the north side of the Square in downtown Houston.

Curry started working for McQuary in 1998 and bought the business in 2007.

Curry offers the traditional selection of videos: Drama, Crime, Scary, Westerns, Comedy, Childrens, Romance and Action.

Membership is required to rent any video from J’s, but it’s free and requires only a valid driver’s license, a current phone number and address.

“We are open seven days a week and close only for Easter and Christmas Day,” said Curry.

Curry said customer service is the key to her business and her employees, Michelle Griffin and Faye Doss, always offer courteous service with a smile.
