Dameione Rogers’ expansion plans for his restaurant franchise, Magnolia BBQ & Fish, have gone better than expected.
He already has three locations, all of which have opened in the past two years.
Rogers’ first restaurant opened in 2010 on Briar Ridge Road in Tupelo, and a second opened last year on East Main Street. In October, he opened a location on North 4th Avenue in Birmingham.
As its name implies, the restaurant specializes in barbecued – or smoked, to be exact – meat and fried fish.
The rib tips are popular in Tupelo, while smoked chicken with white sauce – an Alabama specialty – is a a favorite in Birmingham.
“We smoke ribs for four hours, pork butts about six hours, and we also smoke chicken,” Rogers said. “We use hickory wood for the smoke.”
There are the usual sides – baked beans, potato salad and cole slaw, for example – but “Miss Annie’s” desserts are popular addtions, too. Annie Traylor manages the East Main location.
Rogers has retail and food experience, having worked for Dodge’s Stores for several years in Virginia, Florida and Kentucky.
“That benefited me; I learned a lot from the Dodge’s,” he said. “They run a tight ship and a great business.”
With business going well, Rogers hopes to make Magnolia BBQ & Fish a household name soon.
“But I don’t think I’d be at this stage without God,” he said. “The Lord has been good for us.”
