TUPELO – Mary McGuire only thought she wanted to be a caterer.
But after working for a bakery and caterer while she majored in hospitality at the University of Mississippi, she decided catering wasn’t her thing.
She always had a knack for cake decorating, and in 2010, she started out at nearby Flowerdale Marketplace. By the next year, she opened her own store on West Main Street. Recently, she moved to a larger location on South Industrial Road.
Her business, Mary McGuire’s Cakes & Confections, specializes in custom birthday and wedding cakes, as well as cupcakes, iced cookies and petit fours.
McGuire does the bulk of the baking and all the decorating, but also gets help from her mother, aunt, cousins and other family whenever needed.
“Mom has saved my life,” she said.
McGuire said since starting her bakery more than three years ago, business has “gone far better than expected.”
With the move to Industrial Road, walk-in traffic has picked up significantly, she said. In addition to the cakes, customers will find goodies like caramel sea salt brownies, chocolate raspberry cupcakes, Nutella cupcakes and lemon squares.
McGuire always is testing new items, and said she’ll have several seasonal items ready, too.
