TUPELO – Filling a 100,000-square-foot store with furniture, accessories, home decor and rugs can be a challenge, but Room to Room owner Lisa Hawkins has quite a knack for it.
But with a talented team working alongside her, the business has grown to one of the largest and most successful in retail furniture in the state and region.
The nurse-turned-entrepreneur had the Velveteen Rabbit, a clothing store, for 12 years. Then, after helping with a going-out-of-business sale with another store, she got the itch to open a furniture store.
“My husband, Jim, said I’m easily bored,” Hawkins said with a laugh.
But running her business successfully is no joke.
“We try to find the best value for our customers, whether it’s good, better or best,” she said.
That means the merchandise in the store covers a range of price points to fit virtually any budget.
“We realize that younger people like to change what they have more often, and aren’t always interested in a big investment,” she said.
For example, a $3,000 leather sofa is nice, but it’s probably not a good idea with young kids in the house who can get creative with scissors and markers.
And the store’s popularity also a result of the service at the store.
“We want to treat everybody like we want to be treated,” Hawkins said. “And I also think we’ve been successful because God has truly blessed us. I’ve been privileged to work with some incredible people. It’s really not me.”
