Homegrown: Silly Whispers

By Floyd Ingram/Chickasaw Journal

They are known as the “Quilting Sisters” and if you have an idea for a sewing creation, Silly Whispers can help you make it. Silly Whispers brought a successful business from Mantee to the Square in Houston as it expanded its business to those who sew and to those looking for that special item for a special friend or special occasion.
Sisters Linda Stevens, Becky Johnson and Hope Lee say Silly Whispers is a traditional fabric store that also offers much more.
“We love it when someone has an idea and comes to us,” Johnson said. “We can give them some tips and show them what we have and can do. That’s the fun part of this business.”
And Silly Whispers caters to experienced seamstress as well as first-timers looking to create something for family and friends with their own hands.
Silly Whispers has bolts of cloth and can special order fabric. The sisters sew backings on quilts and have all the accessories to turn a handmade quilt into a work of art. They also sell children’s clothes or can help create a unique outfit from scratch.
They also do monogramming, have crocheting necessities and carry the traditional items from needles and thread to ribbon and buttons.
“Our longtime customers have been pleased with the new store and people in Houston have been so nice to us since we opened,” said Stevens. “We urge people to come and take a look around and get to know us. If we don’t have it, we can usually get it.”
