T. Sappington & Co.
Tommy Sappington’s father started his namesake downtown clothing store in New Albany in 1956. The younger Sappington has worked at the store since he was 14.
In 1986, Tommy Sappington and his wife, Martha Carolyn, bought the business, which has evolved over the years.
T. Sappington & Co. now specializes in premium denim jeans for teenage girls and women. The store’s free, same-day alteration service makes the business stand out. Sappington has a method that simulates of a day of wear and then he alters the jeans for a custom fit.
“People always come to us for that,” he said.
The store also carries contemporary fashion tops and dresses for women, in addition to Polo Ralph Lauren shirts and other brands for men.
Plus, the store sells at least 30 styles of Toms Shoes.
The store is inside a building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Sappingtons renovated it three years ago, adding hardwood floors and a stamped metal ceiling.
The Sappingtons own the business and are its only employees.
“We are a mom-and-pop store at its best,” Sappington said. “We are always here so you are always dealing with the owner.”
