Angele Mueller grew up in New Orleans and always has considered herself a foodie. She taught school in Tupelo and New Albany for years, until in 2002, she opened her own restaurant.
Tallahatchie Gourmet – named for the river that runs through New Albany – opened on Bankhead Street. Two and a half years ago, it moved to its current location on Main Street in downtown New Albany.
And a year ago, Jeff Olson bought into the business as the co-owner.
The restaurant specializes in Southern and New Orleans-style food. Popular items are shrimp and grits, po’boys, fried oyster platters and signature salads. The restaurant also has daily plate lunch specials.
The restaurant seats 60 people, but Olson and Mueller are working to reconfigure seating to accommodate 100.
The restaurant focuses on its lunch service, but it also does a brisk catering business. It delivers orders across Northeast Mississippi.
Tallahatchie Gourmet also is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to service its retail clients, who buy frozen casseroles, refrigerated chicken salad and other meals.
