Homegrown: The Caron Gallery

Kim Caron wants people to know that art is for everyone. The owner and operator of the Caron Gallery in downtown Tupelo showcases and sells the works of Mississippi artists.

“The biggest hurdle we have had is to show people that we are not a stiff, white-walled sort of place,” she said. Caron said making art more approachable is one of her goals.

“People don’t realize that for what they pay for a print” at a home decor store “they could get an original piece of art,” she said.

Caron emphasized that no experience is necessary when selecting an original work. She said the only thing that matters is that you love what you buy.

Caron and her husband, Tupelo dentist Dr. Richard Caron. began shopping for their own home at the Gumtree Festival. “We would buy one piece a year,” she said, adding that most of those pieces still hang in her home today.

Original pieces in Caron’s gallery range as much in price as they do in style. Earrings that start at $15 a pair are situated near an oil painting by a well-established artist priced at $4,000. And the gallery hits almost every price point and medium.

The small gallery has a lot from which to choose. In addition to paintings, Caron offers sculpture, jewelry, pottery and photography.

Caron said, “Buying art is a process.” She frequently takes pieces to the homes of potential customers so that they can see how it will look in their own home, not just in the gallery.

Caron’s enthusiasm for art is broad. She encourages her customers to find what appeals to them and not worry about any particular style or medium.
