HOMEGROWN: The Tin Roof

Laura McCreary’s in-laws have a long history of owning small businesses in Baldwyn.
So when she moved to Baldwyn with her family five years ago, she knew it was just a matter of time before she fulfilled her lifelong dream of having her own business.
She started asking her friends what they bought, where they shopped and where they didn’t shop. She took all that information and opened The Tin Roof in November 2009.
“We just really had a need for it in this town,” she said. “There was a need for a place that sold affordable gifts for the entire family.
“People want to shop here. They don’t want to have to go to Tupelo or Booneville, especially with gas the way it is.”
The Tin Roof sells gifts, home decor items, pottery, picture frames, jewelry, purses, aprons, magnets and other accessories. Prices range from $1 for Japanese puzzle erasers to $75 for pottery from Mississippi artists.
The store does free gift wrapping and free delivery inside Baldwyn’s city limits.
“I knew no one when I moved here,” McCreary said. “I’ve been here five years and now people call me on my cell phone and say, ‘I need a gift for so and so. Can you run it over to the funeral home?’ It’s really small-town life.”
