HOMEGROWN: Town and Country

Ila Dean Lackie has greeted hungry people with a smile and friendly conversation for the better part of 45 years at Town and Country. And when she says she loves them all, it truly comes from the bottom of her heart.
The original location opened on April 28, 1968, on top of a hill in the Darracott community.
“When it would rain, it was so slick, we had a truck to bring all the people up to the restaurant,” said Lackie’s daughter, Libby Rooks, who grew up with the restaurant’s popularity with her siblings, Kenneth Dean and Darnell Bowler.
Lackie’s husband was known for his famous hushpuppy recipe and every table would receive a complimentary pan.
In May 1976, Town and Country moved to Highway 45 in Aberdeen in part of a building Lackie’s brother owned. In 1982, the entire structure became the restaurant and in 1997, Lackie added on to the building again.
Town and Country is widely known for its favorite dishes like fish, steak and hamburger steak, along with its salad bar.
In addition to the food, Town and Country hosts music on Tuesday nights, courtesy of Pat Birkholz and Benny and Linda Davis.
In Lackie’s absence, her first granddaughter, Kim McCandless, runs the restaurant. She has worked at Town and Country for 21 years.
