Kilgore’s Supermarket changes ownership

TUPELO – Kilgore’s Supermarket on South Gloster Street has been purchased by Food Giant, according to the manager. The purchase became official on May 1.
Enoch Smithey, who has worked for Kilgore’s for more than 14 years, stayed on as general manager. Smithey said James Kilgore, the former owner, was close friends with Food Giant President Ron Watkins. Kilgore died last year.
Food Giant will keep the name Kilgore’s in honor of the late former owner. Since James Kilgore’s death, the store had been operated by his son Jason who has since relocated.
Smithey said the sale was a “unique situation” and was amicable.
Food Giant operates more than 100 stores in eight states, including 23 in Mississippi.
