William “Skip” Scaggs has been named the Monroe County Chamber’s new executive director, effective Feb. 1.
He replaces Tony Green, who stepped down in August.
Scaggs is a familiar face in Northeast Mississippi, having attended numerous economic development announcements.
“Monroe County has demonstrated its commitment to economic development and I am looking forward to being a part of the team to strengthen the local economy,” he said.
Since 2010, Scaggs has been director of existing business and business division at the Mississippi Development Authority. Before joining MDA in 2010, he held business development positions at the chambers of commerce in Meridian and Birmingham.
He’ll remain with MDA until the end of the month.
“Skip has been an important part of the MDA team, helping our existing businesses grow within the state, even during some tough economic times,” said MDA Executive Director Brent Christensen. “Monroe County Chamber of Commerce is gaining a proven, results-oriented leader who will work tirelessly to bring economic development success to the county. We wish Skip the best of luck in his new position.”
Scaggs and his family will be introduced to key officials and community members in a “meet-and-greet” at the Monroe County Government Complex at 4 p.m. today. The event isn’t open to the public. However, a public reception will be held at the Magnolias in Aberdeen on Jan. 23 from 3:30 p.m-5:30 p.m.
“Skip has an extensive background and a proven track record within the field of economic development,” said Ken Smith, chairman of the chamber’s board of directors. “Hiring someone of the caliber of a Skip Scaggs does not happen accidentally. It takes teamwork to make something like this happen and Monroe County has stepped up to the plate.”
