TUPELO – The 70-room La Quinta Inn & Suites is now open on North Gloster Street.
The hotel has 16 employees and is owned by Mike Patel, who owns the neighboring Days Inn. The business officially opened its doors to the public Thursday afternoon.
General manager Martha Scott said the hotel mainly caters to business travelers with its Internet access, large desks, business center, laundry facilities, fitness center, pool and meeting room. And so far, so good, she said, of her sales.
“I wasn’t expecting much over the weekend and it turned out we did quite well,” Scott said. “I’m very pleased.”
The four-story hotel replaced the Village Inn at the interchange for Gloster Street and McCullough Boulevard.
And while the country may be in a recession, Patel said it’s the right time for him to open his hotel.
“Tupelo’s a good town,” Patel said. “I don’t see the problems in Tupelo.”
Earlier this year, Comfort Suites opened on North Gloster and the Hilton Garden Inn in Fairpark opened an expansion. Plans for a Best Western also were announced this year.
Scott, who manages La Quinta and the Days Inn, said she feels “very postive” about the city’s hotel industry.
“I think Tupelo is still growing,” Scott said. “There’s still a lot of construction going on in Tupelo. Tupelo has a lot to offer. I’m not worried about having empty rooms.”
