TUPELO – Mt. Fuji Japanese Steakhouse is open in Kings Crossing, the North Gloster shopping development that is anchored by Kohl’s.
With the addition of Mt. Fuji, Tupelo is home to five Japanese restaurants. Another Japanese restaurant – Mist – is scheduled to open soon in Crye-Leike Plaza.
“From the outside, it looks so plain and when they come inside, it just changes,” Zhou said.
When diners enter through the front door, they walk on a bridge over a small pool. The surrounding rock walls are waterfalls. The interior front door also has a working waterfall in it.
Inside, the restaurant is split into several dining areas, including a large bar, a sushi bar, hibachi tables and regular dining tables. All together, Zhou said he can seat about 300 people.
The restaurant serves lunch and dinner and has about 15 employees. Zhou said Mt. Fuji is owned by an Alabama businessman, who operates another Mt. Fuji location in Hoover, Ala.
Mt. Fuji opened in mid-July, quietly letting its staff train before having an official grand opening. Zhou said business has been good so far, with the hibachi tables being the most popular dining option so far with customers.
