TUPELO – Tourism sales tax revenues jumped nearly 22 percent in April.
Kim Hanna, Tupelo’s interim chief financial officer, said revenues totaled $255,852, up 21.89 percent from the previous year.
The amount represents the February earnings from a 2 percent tax on hotels, motels and restaurants. It takes about three months for the state to process the money and disperse it to municipalities.
Overall, the CVB is up 8.22 percent for the year. It budgeted for a growth of 3 percent.
CVB Marketing Director Stephanie Moody-Coomer said the numbers were boosted by events such as the Mississippi Senior High Beta Club Convention and Valentine’s Day.
The climb comes after revenues fell 0.42 percent in December. The CVB finished fiscal year 2008 with a growth of 7.05 percent.
