Smoothie King moves toward Tupelo start-up

TUPELO – Work finally has started on a Smoothie King location that was supposed to open earlier this year.

Last week, a construction crew was at King’s Crossing getting ready for the business that focuses on “nutritional fruit and function-based, fresh blended smoothies.”

King’s Crossing is the shopping development anchored by Kohl’s and Ross.

Kornel Romada, a leasing agent with Texas-based Woodmont Co., which manages the development, confirmed that the work is for Smoothie King. The space is about 1,500 square feet and is in one of the front buildings facing North Gloster Street. It is opposite the access road from Newk’s.

Smoothie King signed its lease in January, as first reported on the Journal’s business blog, Biz Buzz.

Franchisee Ray Shoemaker of Tupelo said he expects the business will open in the first part of August. He plans to hire eight full-time and part-time employees. He’ll accept applications starting next week via rshoemaker@rhdhealthnet.com.

Romada said along with construction at Smoothie King, the rest of the development is moving along nicely. He said Kirkland’s has been doing well in its new location and Extreme Heat had good customer traffic in May.

Romada said he has signed a letter of intent with a restaurant, but since it is nonbinding, he declined to provide more details for publication. He also said he is in talks with other retailers and restaurants, but nothing is a done deal yet.
