TUPELO – Downtown Tupelo welcomed its newest addition on Tuesday with the opening of About the South.
The gift, collectibles and interiors shop at 120 W. Main St. is next to the iconic Tupelo Hardware store.
And the store also fills a building that sat vacant for 15 years.
“It’s such a great building. … just after Christmas I had heard about it being available,” said store owner Susie Morgan.
The building was most recently home to Crawford Insurance, although it had been closed for a decade and a half.
About the South got its start inside Joyful Creations on McCullough Boulevard.
“I had always wanted to open my own business,” she said.
In May 2013, she opened a small shop at J Britt Lighting & Interiors, also on McCullough Boulevard.
Morgan had always thought a downtown location would be ideal and had even eyed the old Crawford Insurance building as it sat empty and unused. But it wasn’t available to anyone until Robin Haire bought the property, gutted it and renovated it.
That drew Morgan in immediately, and she inquired about renting the 2,500-square-foot building.
The store carries a variety of gifts and collectibles made primarily in Mississippi, but “definitely from all over the South,” Morgan said.
“There are a couple lines I started out with that I still carry, including Hi Yall! Art,” Morgan said. “Frankly, without them I don’t know how we could have been successful.”
The store also sells Blue Delta Jeans, the Verona-based custom blue jeans maker.
About the South is the latest addition to the 100 block of Main Street in the past six months, including its newest restaurant, KOK. Relocating to the block were Swirlz, The Farmhouse and The Caron Gallery.
