BLUE MOUNTAIN – The president of Big M/Diesel Express Trucking has plans to add at least 150 employees over the next five years if the economy picks up.
Company President Michael Massengill said Big M now has about 200 employees, but it has been limited by space restrictions in its 9-year-old headquarters in Hickory Flat.
Last week, Massengill finalized a deal with Berkline/ Benchcraft to buy the Blue Mountain trucking facility at the furniture company’s former complex in Blue Mountain.
The new trucking facility includes about 10,000 square feet of office space and a 15,000-square-foot warehouse/truck maintenance area with 10 acres of trailer storage area.
The former headquarters in Hickory Flat are about 10 miles from the new building and will continue to operate as a logistics operation “for the foreseeable future,” Massengill said.
It’s “hard to pinpoint an exact number” of people the company will add, Massengill said, but he’s hoping to hire about 150 to 200 people over the next five years “depending on the economy returning.” It’s good news for the county, which in March had an unemployment rate of 14.8 percent.
Big M’s growth plans include drivers, controllers, logistics, personnel, dispatchers, truck maintenance and facilities maintenance, according to a press release from the Tippah County Development Foundation.
According to Duane Bullard, president/CEO of the TCDF, the company will first hire employees to staff the maintenance shops, fuel bays and wash bays.
Right now, Big M has three job openings and plans to hire more people when it moves into its new building this fall.
“As demand for transportation needs come back and Toyota starts back up, I hope to be able to grow and get a piece of that business,” Massengill said. “I’m trying to set myself up for when things return to the good days.”
Once renovations have been made to the new facility, an official ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony will be announced.
