TUPELO – Mike McBunch is passionate about his profession as a barber, and others have noticed.
McBunch, the owner of The Hair Co. in downtown Tupelo, was named the 2008 master barber of the year by Barbers International.
The award, which is displayed in his shop inside Reed’s, says it was given to McBunch for “outstanding service and dedication to the barber profession.”
It’s one of two top awards that the organization gives out every year. The organization’s worldwide membership elects the master barber annually, McBunch said.
“It’s a real big honor,” he said. “It’s really an incredible thing. I surely wasn’t looking for it. I’ve had letters and cards from Russia to Europe to the Bahamas with people congratulating me.”
McBunch is from Nettleton and has been a barber for 29 years. He worked in a barber shop in Amory for eight years, before moving to Tupelo in 1990 to help open Brock’s Hair Design College.
In 1991, he opened The Hair Co. inside Reed’s in downtown Tupelo.
He’s received many honors in his profession, including being named Mississippi’s barber of the year at age 29.
Now, he’s working on creating his own product and tool line, in addition to writing an education book that will be used internationally by Roffler Hairstyling College. He also travels frequently to teach barbering techniques and to judge competitions.
He said he has had multiple opportunities to leave Tupelo to teach or to work abroad, but he doesn’t see a move happening.
“I enjoy Tupelo and I plan to be here until the good Lord comes again,” he said.
