TUPELO – New Saltillo High School athletic director and head football coach Pat Byrd was greeted by about 20 SHS football supporters Monday night as he was approved by the Lee County School Board.
“That was impressive,” Bryd said of the reception. “It shows the interest in their school and their kids, and that is important. I think the support will be good.”
Byrd served as head football coach and athletic director at Amory for the last 10 years. He’s also been an assistant at Amory and at Louisville, working under Bobby Hall. Byrd will be assisted at Saltillo by James Sloan, a former head coach at Tupelo, Shannon and Clinton High Schools.
“Coach Byrd and Coach Sloan are two of the best, and I think Pat Byrd is going to be a real asset for the Saltillo community,” Lee County Superintendent Mike Scott said. Scott coached agains Byrd when Scott was coach at Shannon High School.
Byrd said he liked the opportunity to build a program from the bottom.
“I like it because it is a challenge and a growing school,” Byrd said. “I like the challenge of doing something at a different place.”
He said he looked forward to meeting his new team and seeing its work ethic.
“I believe the off-season is when a football team is created,” Byrd said.
