Calhoun will have one local newspaper

CALHOUN CITY – The Monitor-Herald, a weekly newspaper based here, will cease publication Dec. 31.
Journal Inc., the paper’s owner since 2005, emphasized the need for a single strong weekly newspaper in Calhoun County in announcing the decision to close the Monitor-Herald.
“Calhoun County is best served by one good newspaper and The Calhoun County Journal is positioned to continue to serve as the weekly newspaper of record for the entire county,” said Journal Inc. Chairman Billy Crews.
Weekly paid circulation at the Monitor-Herald has increased 42 percent to 811 since Journal Inc. bought the paper four years ago, but the Bruce-based Calhoun County Journal is much larger with a circulation of 4,700.
Journal Inc. publishes the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal and eight weekly newspapers in the region. The Monitor-Herald is the smallest in circulation and revenues in the group.
