TUPELO – The American Cancer Society threw a birthday party for everybody Saturday.
The local organization kicked off the nationwide “American Cancer Society: The Official Sponsor of Birthdays” campaign at the monthly flea market held at the Tupelo Furniture Market. Organizer Elizabeth Fair passed out cupcakes and T-shirts to cancer survivors who were shopping at the flea market.
“We want to wish everybody a happy birthday,” said Fair. “With all the medical advancements made, cancer prevention and treatment has really increased the survival rate, so that has allowed everyone to have more happy birthdays. We want people to know that the American Cancer Society is right here in Tupelo if they need us.”
Fair said many people don’t realize that there is a local office for the cancer society that is here to help at 607 W. Main St.
“People see the commercials on television and wonder how to get in contact with us and we’re right here under their noses,” said Fair. “We are here to help victims and their families make it through this disease.”
Tupelo’s Heather Foster was diagnosed with breast cancer nearly 10 years ago. When she saw the booth with the purple and white American Cancer Society T-shirts hanging up, Foster said she had to stop in and say hello.
“These people did so much for me and my family when I was going through my cancer,” she said. “From counseling to just having someone to talk to. Even though my family was with me the whole way, no one could understand what I was going through and that’s where the cancer society came in at. They had people there to talk to me and to let me know I was going to beat the cancer and they really understood.”
