OXFORD – Even though dirt work began weeks ago and crews were already smoothing fresh-poured concrete, Cannon Motors and Chamber of Commerce representatives officially broke ground on a new dealership location Tuesday.
“Since we’re just breaking ground, these guys are moving pretty fast,” joked Jay Hughes, a partner in the Oxford franchise.
Cannon, which sells Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac at its current Oxford dealership on West Jackson Avenue, also has GM, Ford/Lincoln and Nissan dealerships in Greenwood, Cleveland and Jackson, along with pre-owned dealerships in Calhoun City and Grenada.
Max Hipp, executive director of the Oxford-Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, said, “We’re very happy about this; it’s a wonderful addition to the economy of Oxford, and we look forward to much success on your behalf.”
Michael Joe Cannon, the dealership’s namesake owner, said more than doubling available space, a higher traffic count and the difficulties inherent in the 50-year-old current facility weighed in favor of the new location.
“We felt like it was something we needed to do,” he said. “The economy hasn’t come back as much as we hope it will, but with the extra traffic count here and the visibility, we felt like it was a win-win.”
The new Cannon location is on the north side of Highway 6 West, next to Discount Lumber and across from Waller Funeral Home. It will join several other dealerships – Oxford Toyota, Belk Ford and Chandler Nissan – in sites along the city’s main entrance from the west. Chandler Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep will be the only new-car dealership that is not on the four-lane highway.
The target for opening the new Cannon Motors facility is November or December.
