CDF moves to Fairpark

TUPELO – The Community Development Foundation on Friday bid farewell to its offices on Main Street in downtown Tupelo.
The economic development organization at noon closed its office and began moving into its new $5.4 million building in Fairpark.
The new three-story building is behind the Renasant Center for IDEAs at the southwest corner of Main and Elizabeth streets.
CDF put out a statement Friday morning saying that members should use the new building starting at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Along with other city offices, CDF will be closed Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Also, all January meetings will be held in the Renasant Center for IDEAs, which is operated by CDF.
CDF’s Jon Milstead earlier this week declined to discuss the interior of the new building, saying the entity wants to surprise its members.
In a 2009 proposal, CDF said the building “will add flexible, innovative, business start-up space, with shared conference and training rooms.”
The building also was designed for LEED certification, a nationally recognized eco-friendly standard. It won’t be certified until the building is complete, according to The McCarty Co., which won the design bid.
The 24,300-square-foot building is considered the Phase II expansion of the Renasant Center for IDEAs. Half of the $5.4 million project was funded with stimulus money from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration.
The federal money had to be matched. Lee County and CDF are each paying half of $2.7 million match, according to Lee County Administrator Sean Thompson.
The grant proposal said the project is expected to generate 179 new jobs and $24.2 million in private investment within nine years of the project’s completion. The grant said the numbers relate to potential businesses looking to locate on the second floor of the facility.
Milstead said CDF will have an open house for the new facility, but the date had not been finalized as of Friday.
