TUPELO – National makeup artist and Aberdeen native Billy Brasfield will be in Northeast Mississippi this week doing makeovers and promoting his new makeup brush collection.
Brasfield, known professionally as billy b, is based in New York and Los Angeles, and his clients include Sharon Stone, Jennifer Lopez and Michelle Pfeiffer. But this week, instead of celebrity faces, he’s focusing on NeMiss women.
He’ll be at Reed’s in Tupelo on Thursday and Neilson’s in Oxford on Friday. The makeovers are free with the purchase of the billybBEAUTY Master Paint Brush Collection. The 13-brush collection retails for $249. The stores sell the brushes individually as well.
In addition, the billybBEAUTY line includes an eyelash curler and a retractable lip brush.
Brasfield has been touring the country as part of The American Beauty Tour. Stops include Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Dallas and Toronto.
His visit to Northeast Mississippi is not part of the tour, but he wanted to have events at family-owned stores such as Reed’s because he “felt like it was the right place for me to be.”
“When I was there, Reed’s was like Saks Fifth Avenue,” said Brasfield, referring to his childhood in Aberdeen. “I learned how to do makeup on real women in Macy’s. It’s sort of me coming back and coming full circle to do makeup on real women.”
All the time slots at Reed’s and Neilson’s are booked, but even if women aren’t scheduled for a makeover, Brasfield encourages everyone to watch the process.
“I taught myself how to do makeup by watching,” he said after his event in Atlanta where he did Paula Abdul’s makeup for the “American Idol” auditions. “Hopefully, they’ll walk away having learned something.”
