Charities hold their breath

Charities nationwide may feel the pinch of tough economic times, but Northeast Mississippi’s dominant nonprofit organizations seem to be holding their own.
“So far, we’ve had a very good campaign,” said Melinda Tidwell, director of the seven-county United Way of Northeast Mississippi. “The people who are giving are still very generous.”
Some 178 charities call the region their home, raising funds for projects as diverse as food pantries and pet spaying.
But it’s a mixed report for those organizations with budgets below $250,000, according to a recent report from the secretary of state’s office.
For example, Tupelo’s Touched by an Angel Ministries Inc. showed its best fundraising year since 2001 with $177,246 gained in fiscal year 2008. So did Union County Good Samaritan Center in New Albany with $70,697.
For W.A.G.S. of Monroe County, set up to help low-income people with the cost to spay and neuter their pets, revenues dropped from $40,258 in 2007 to $3,849 in 2008.
Spay Inc. of Saltillo, with a similar goal, showed financial improvement in 2008 over 2007, although neither was as good as its revenues from 2003 through 2005.
“Mississippi continues to be one of the top-ranked states in the country supporting charitable giving,” said Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann. Informed charitable giving helps ensure the public’s donations do what they want them to do, he noted.
Northeast Mississippi’s largest charity, the America Family Association Inc. of Tupelo, has national outreach through its conservative, religious programming via radio and the Internet.
In its latest public financial report to the state, AFA took in $19.39 million in the fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2008.

Hopeful in 2010
These figures and more come from the secretary of state’s recently released annual report on Mississippi charities, showing some 3,200 registered with the state agency. It’s been collecting charity data since 1991.
The report shows the most recent financial activity, fiscal years 2007 and 2008, by the charities registered in Mississippi. Charities yet to complete an operational year often report no revenues.
Nationwide, a fall survey by charity analyst GuideStar shows that giving is down across the first nine months of 2009 compared with the same period in 2008. And it shows no significant differences by organization size, emphasis or geography.
But GuideStar reports most organizations say they are hopeful about 2010.
That optimism is found among some of Northeast Mississippi’s largest charitable organizations.
Michael Clayborne with CREATE Foundation in Tupelo feels optimistic about how 2009 will turn out, although he recognizes the organization is a little different from others throughout the region.
CREATE, set up 37 years ago, stretches across 16 counties and is a conduit through which donors can make their gifts available for general charitable giving or for specific purposes.
“It’s been kind of incredible,” Clayborne said in reflecting on 2009, especially in the shadow of a very difficult financial 2008. “It appears we will have perhaps our second-best year ever for regular giving.”
The latest state report shows 2008 was a “off” year for CREATE with $5.28 million in total revenues, compared with $7.86 million in 2007.
In its latest financial report to the state, AFA also slipped slightly with $19.39 million receipts in the fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2008, down from $22.5 million the year before.
Patrick J. Vaughn, general counsel, said that despite economic difficulties throughout the country, this year’s fall Share-A-Thon brought in about $1.4 million, or about 10 percent over last year’s push.
“We’re thankful for that,” he said.
Vaughn, like Tidwell and Clayborne, views the rest of 2009 with optimism about contributions.
“December traditionally is our biggest month,” he said.
And he credits AFA’s Internet presence with expanding its reach to new and younger listeners.
Across Lee, Itawamba, Chickasaw, Union, Prentiss, Pontotoc and Tishomingo counties, United Way of Northeast Mississippi raises funds for 61 nonprofit organizations, including the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army, often heavily relied upon during disasters and when economic times are hard.
A Dec. 1 poll commissioned by the Red Cross showed that nearly 70 percent of people believe it is more important to donate this year because of economic difficulties.
Only 20 percent of Americans plan to reduce charitable giving during the holiday season, according to the survey.
“People are still giving,” said Roger Lowe of the American Red Cross, “but they’re giving less.”
He added that the recession has meant that it has never been harder to give but that giving has never felt better.
Donations to charitable causes in the United States reached an estimated $307.6 billion in 2008, a 2 percent drop from $314.1 billion in 2007, according to Giving USA Foundation, a consultancy for nonprofits.
The American Red Cross has experienced a drop in fundraising, registering an average 25 percent dip in individual donations this year, according to Lowe.
But he added that economic hardship may have increased solidarity despite money being tighter.
“People realize that there are folks in greater need than they are, and they dig deep to give,” he explained.
CREATE’s Clayborne remembers the financial shocks felt by his potential donors last year as the U.S. stock market was hit hard and the country slipped into a deep recession.
“We know a lot of organizations are hurting,” Clayborne added, saying CREATE funds more than 100 special projects and more than $1 million for hundreds of other worthy causes. “We really feel good about being available to help.”
