Lena Chewe, the widow of alderman Terry Chewe, has been selected to represent Ward 1 until the next city election.
She was all smiles and getting hugs from everyone after all the votes were counted Tuesday night.
Chewe was vying for the job against retired businessman Scott Stringer and McNeil Stanford who works for the Pontotoc City Schools.
Chewe won the election by a 244 votes to Stringer’s 29 votes while Stanford picked up 39 votes.
Her husband, Terry, died last month. She was the first person to qualify for the position after his death.
“We talked while we were waiting on the ambulance to come get him, and I promised him I would take his place,” she said.
She ran for the position on the platform of continuing her husband’s strong leadership.
Lena Chewe said she wants to continue the growth and vision of Ward 1 and all sections of the city of Pontotoc.
